Pinoys win at Cannes Film Festival

From the 2000 entries from different countries, two brilliant Pinoy film makers made a mark at the 61st Cannes Film Festival in France. The Pinoys won Best Short Film for their comedy production, “The Haircut”.

The film, which tells of a story of a barber who ”cut the hair” of a bald man, is directed by Carlo Ledesma and produced by Mel Lozano.

Starstruck Grand Winner Jennylyn Mercado announced in yesterday’s Startalk that her baby is a boy. This, her clarification about the much-talked about new boy in her life after her breakup with fellow GMA7 kapuso artist Patrick Garcia.

Real-life suvivor Jen also says now that she wishes for peace of mind, and for his new boy to be healthy.

All-time idol Harrison Ford plays anew the role of an adventurous archeologist in the latest series of Indiana Jones  —-  “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull”. Ford was first noticed as Hans Solo in Star Wars. Among his more popular movies are Air Force I, The Fugitive, Apocalypse Now, American Graffiti and Patriot Games.  He was awarded as Star of the Century by the American National Association of Theater Owners in 1994 and was given the American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award by Golden Globe in 2002, plus three People’s Choice awards.

Due to varied reasons, whether nefarious or otherwise, some of the so-called “sexy stars of yesteryears” found have themselves in somewhat impoverished condition after basking in the limelight of fame and fortune.  Carmen Ronda who made a string of “bomba” films recently became homeless when her house in Antipolo was demolished.  Sultry singer-actress Didith Reyes landed in small pubs and beerhouses in Laguna. Another starlet, Josephine Manuel worked as a maid-laundry woman to earn a living.  Erstwhile sexy star Sarsi Emmanuel was hired as a ticket seller in mini-carnivals while Cherry Madrigal became a vendor selling mangoes.

Wowowee on Honolulu Controversy

Filipino viewers of Wowowee were disappointed by the cast of the noon-time show for not appearing in a private party in Honolulu, Hawaii.

People allegedly came to the venue to watch and meet the hosts and cast of Wowowee paying as high as $100 each. Mariel Rodriguez and Valerie Concepcion are co-hosts of the show. No one from the crew explained the embarrassing incident.

Arroyo Pardons 9 Magdalo soldiers

President Arroyo gives conditional pardon to nine Magdalo soldiers during the turn-over ceremony for the new AFP Chief of Staff Alexander Yano. The executive clemency wasgiven by Arroyo based onthe recommendation of outgoing Cheif Esperon. Arroyo also praised former Chief of Staff Esperon for a job well done, inculding the combat of terrorists in the country, CPP-NPA, and peace in Mindanao.

People’s champ Manny Pacquiao was also present during the turn-over ceremony.

Batangas Governor Vilma Santos wishes to go back to acting, atleast to even do one movie, for the year. Reports say that a Judy Anne - Vilma Santos movie tandem is in the can, making the Star for all Seasons all the more excited. The actress says she is looking forward into doing the movie, and she wanted it beautifully done.

Governor Vi also led a bikathon in Batangas, their call to rehabilitate Taal Lake, saying she is serious in protecting the said water body.

Megastar Sharon Cuneta recalls that she and the staff of Star Cinema could not afford to eat at restaurants in London when they were shooting “Caregiver”.  “We would always buy “take-out” foods because restaurants in London are very expensive,” according to Shawie. The movie, directed by Chito Roño, will be shown in celebration of Sharon’s 30 years in showbusiness and as Star Cinema’s 15th anniversary offering.
