A 31.5-hectare island in the Kalayaan Group of Islands (also known as highly-contested Spratlys) is a barangay of the municipality of Kalayaan, Puerto Prinsesa.  It is the biggest of the seven islands occupied by the Philippine Government but smaller than the 43-hectare Taiping Island occupied by Taiwan. Known as Pag-asa Island, it is inhabited by about 300 civilians and several members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The island has an electric generator that operates only from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily. It is only during this time when residents can recharge their cellphones or watch DVD and shows on Dream Cable via the military’s wireless satellite communications.  Food supply, like rice and canned goods, is subsidized by the municipal government.  The island is reached by a two-hour plane ride from Manila or a six-hour boat ride from Palawan. AFP personnel go to the island once week onboard a C130 plane while the Philippine Navy ship make its routine visit once every three months.
