“Hoodlum Terminator” and retired police colonel Alfonso “Boyong” Mañalac died of heart attack at the Manila Central University last Sunday. Boyong was a former Malabon police chief before he became a city councilor of Malabon. His exploits in the police service was shown in the movie titled, “Boyong Mañalac, Hoodlum Terminator” topbilled by veteran actor Eddie Garcia in the ‘80s. His colorful career in the police service somehow suffered with the killing of his son, Marlon, whose death became controversial after several policemen were tagged in the murder. Maritime Industry Authority ( MARINA ) offered a suspension order in all Aboitiz Transport System vessels after the tragic sinking of SuperFerry 9 last Sunday that killed 9 people, and rescued 958 passengers including its crew members. According to Ma. Concepcion Arbolario, Marina franchising director,the agency had issued a show cause order, which effectively prohibited Aboitiz’s 10 passenger-cargo vessels from sailing, pending an investigation starting Sept. 15. MARINA will also audit the Aboitiz fleet to ensure the ships’ seaworthiness and the crews’ competence and ordered them to pay the survivors P50,000 and indemnify the families of the fatalities. Meanwhile, Aboitiz Vice President Jess Supan said that they will comply to the order even if they have not yet receive the notice.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and other Politicians attended the said funeral rites to pay their last respect for the INC Executive Minister. Ka Erdy died last Monday of cardiopulmonary arrest at his home in Quezon City at the age of 84, survived by his wife Cristina, INC Deputy Executive Minister Eduardo, Felix Nathaniel and Marco Eraño, and daughters Lolita, Erlinda and Liberty. 12 people was reportedly drowned and 30 others were missing as M/V Superferry 9 tilted and sank off in Zamboanga del Norte early yesterday. A total of 926 passengers were rescued by the Philippine Navy and Coastguards. Rescued passengers and crewmen were transferred to two nearby commercial ships. Based on the Coast Guard officials update, 900 of the 968 people on board have been rescued as of 3:05 p.m. yesterday. Meanwhile, the Aboitiz Transport System took the responsibility of providing assistance for the victims and the survivors, as the ship was insured. SuperFerry 9 was carrying 847 passengers, 117 crew members and four sea marshals.

LPG Marketers Association takes another price adjustment as they increase their A P1 autogas effective today. According to LPGMA president Arnel Ty, the price increase took effect earlier at 6 a.m. Autogas is an LPG-based vehicle fuel that is primarily fed to especially converted taxis. LPGMA explained that they needed to recover P2.20 in terms of their retail price for autogas. Petron Corp. also increased its autogas price last wednesday by P1.41 per liter. The fuel currently retails between P22 and P23. On the other hand, Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes told LPG retailers to stop making premature announcements regarding price hikes, saying that it could do more harm than good.
78 out of 108 passed the Guidance Counselor Licensure Examination given by the Board of Guidance and Counseling in Manila last August 2009. The announcement was made yesterday in order to inform the examiners. Professional Regulatory Commission also revealed that 76 applicants were approved for registration without examination as Guidance Counselors in accordance with Republic Act No. 8981. There will be a registration for the issuance of Professional Identification Card that will start from September 9 to 18. Oath-taking ceremony of the successful examinees will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Centennial Hall of Manila Hotel in Manila. Philippine Guidance and Counseling Association, Inc. (PGCA) registration will also start on September 9, 2009.

National Council for Commuters Protection aims to opposed plans to re-impose a P10 add-on rate for taxi cabs. According to NCCP president Elvira Medina, they will block the petition once taxi operators file it before the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board ( LTFRB ). The group threatened to file an appeal to reimpose the P10 compulsory tip because of a series of price hikes in LPG. Medina also added that taxi operators should also discipline drivers who are arrogant, abusive and selective. It was recalled that LTFRB suspended the P10 add-on rate for taxis last Dec. 3 2008 when LPG prices dropped.
Presidential aspirants Governors Ed Panlilio of Pampanga and Grace Padaca of Isabela have decided to withdraw from the May elections and support Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III on its aim to a higher position in the 2010 elections. This was after Sen. Mar Roxas, decided to step aside in favor of Aquino, who has gone on a spiritual retreat to seek “divine guidance” and ponder his next move. Panlilio and Padaca are scheduled to formally announce their support for Aquino at Club Filipino on Friday, joining them is Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo of the Liberal Party. This move aims to unify the opposition to have only one standard bearer for the 2010 Presidentiable race.
