hallo mga peeps!!
feeling henyo lang kasi siguro ako ngayon kaya naisipan kong gumawa ng thread na 'to ;)

the mechanics are simple, the first poster should give a word, it may ba a word from the dictionary, or a name of person, animal, place or thing noun yun ah :?: :lolz: opo, pwede yun, kahit pa scientific names pwede rin, as long as nag-eexist yung word na yun huh! then, ibibigay naman nung next poster yung kahulugan nun, or any info regarding dun sa ibinigay na word ng naunang magpost :) okay?

for example:

Luigi Galvani

the next poster should post something about Galvani, say for example ang sumagot eh, si babywitch.... ganito dapat ang sagot niya:

Luigi Galvani invented the Galvanometer.

pwede pang magdadag siya ng iba pang info about Galvani as long as tama ha ;)

then it's babywitch's turn naman to give another word :), sasagutin naman 'yan ng susunod na magpopost....and so on and so forth

okay?

to start the ball rolling.... heto ang unang word

Galileo Galilei

- Galileo was born in Pisa, Italy on February 15, 1564. His father,
Vincenzo Galilei, was a musician. Galileo's mother was Giulia degli Ammannati. Galileo was the first of six (though some people
believe seven) children. His family belonged to the nobility but was not rich. In the early 1570's, he and his family moved to Florence.

-Galileo invented many mechanical devices other than the pump, such as the hydrostatic balance. But perhaps his most famous invention was the telescope. Galileo made his first telescope in 1609, modeled after telescopes produced in other parts of Europe that could magnify objects three times. He created a telescope later that same year that could magnify objects twenty times. With this telescope, he was able to look at the moon, discover the four satellites of Jupiter, observe a supernova, verify the phases of Venus, and discover sunspots. His discoveries proved the Copernican system which states that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun. Prior to the Copernican system, it was held that the universe was geocentric, meaning the sun revolved around the earth

Although in use for the many official events and receptions held by The Queen, areas of Buckingham Palace are opened to visitors on a regular basis.

The State Rooms of the Palace are open to visitors during the Annual Summer Opening in August and September. They are lavishly furnished with some of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection - paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer, Poussin, Canaletto and Claude; sculpture by Canova and Chantrey; exquisite examples of Sèvres porcelain, and some of the finest English and French furniture in the world.

Visits to Buckingham Palace can be combined with visits to The Queen's Gallery, which reopened in May 2002. The nearby Royal Mews is open from 1 March to 31 October 2003.

Wadjet Eye Amulet

- Date : 700 B.C

- Material : Faience

- Description : A wajdet eye is a representation of the eye of Horus, which was removed by Seth.

Jill Rubalcaba brought a great piece of Egyptian history into this Historical Fiction novel, The Wadjet Eye. Damon, the pharoah's physician, awakens to find his mother dead after a long sickness. Damon's mother was an Egyptian, and wanted to be embalmed after death, as it was a tradition in her family. Unfortunately, no one would touch her body, so Damon had to prepare and embalm her himself. Damon told his friend Artemas of the tragedy, and they knew that they must find his father who was located overseas in Spain. Their trip started off well, but they were dragged into a whirlpool along the way, which knocked them off course. They landed in Sicily where they met Cleopatra, the pharaoh of Egypt. Cleopatra sent them to Spain on horses and in return for helping her to uncover information about Cicero the spy, she gave them each a beautiful amulet. Engraved into it was the Eye of Horus or so called, the Wadjet Eye. Damon and Artemas traveled to Spain during a time of war. Damon was encouraged to help the nurses rescue some injured men from battle. One of the warriors brought in to the hospital was Damon's father, Litigus. He had a severe heart problem. Damon rubbed the amulet from Cleopatra on Litigus' heart and he was saved.
The tale begins in Egypt in the year 45 B.C. Egypt is located by the Red Sea and spring season had just begun. Ships were unloading in the harbor, and large houses were lined up along the coast. Midway through the adventure, the story continues in a hospital in Spain. The hospital is filled with injured men from the war being led by Caesar. Blood was everywhere! Surrounding the hospital were forests, and many miles of battlefields. The setting was very tragic.
Artemas is a 17-year-old teenager who is very muscular and has great strength. He has black, curly hair, and the bend in his nose is like that of a hawk. He is adventurous, outgoing and impatient. Artemas is always ready to explore and to be on his own. His most important contribution to this story is loyalty to his friend Damon and to Cleopatra, and now he helps Damon to find and cure his sick father.
Damon and Artemas were being dragged into the deadly whirlpool. Sharks were surrounding the gangplank, and they would die if not rescued. Artemas yells, "I'll have to stand up and wave my arms." Damon responds, "Are you crazy? If you fall off -" Sharks were circling around them, and every so often one would bump into the gangplank. The sharks seemed angered and frustrated. Artemas stood up, a shark bumped into the gangplank, began rocking it wildly, and dragging them in. "Help!", yelled Artemas. Just in time, before drowning or being eaten by sharks, they were lifted up on the deck by the hanging rope of the ship.
The Wadjet Eye is a GREAT narrative of foreign travel. The novel is filled with mystery, curiosity, and wonderful sections about Egyptian history. All children from age 12 to 14 should read this tale if they enjoy adventure and exciting journeys into the past. As you read more and more of this book, you won't want to put it down.

He has published books such as Edad Medya, Mga Kagila-gilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran and Sa Panahon ng Ligalig. He has written hundreds of poems and even lyrics to movie theme songs.

~Jose F. Lacaba (a.k.a Pete Lacaba). His awards alone - including CCP Centennial Honors of the Arts (one of the 100 outstanding artists and "culture heroes") and a first prize in the Carlos Palanca Awards' poetry category in 1983 - are quite impressive. Currently a lecturer at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, this 57-year-old legend in-the-making (if not already), is a born writer, no doubt about that.

~Born in Cagayan de Oro, as a grade school student, he knew he could write. He was very good with theme essays and won in school declamation competitions. In high school he wrote for their school paper and he also began to write poetry.

~Although a scholar at Ateneo de Manila University, Pete Lacaba had to drop out of school due to financial problems. It was then that he started writing for the Philippine Free Press. And while most poems are hard to comprehend (not to mention really hard to write), Pete uses simple words and style that somehow pierces the human soul and affects people from all walks of life.

~For those who don't know, Pete Lacaba is part of that group of socially conscious writers who wrote subversive poetry and rallied against Martial Law. This lead to his arrest, torture and consequent imprisonment for two years. But even before the Martial Law, Pete has written some socially conscious poems. He explains that that was because he studied in a school filled with rich kids that made him more aware of his stature in life.

~His recently re-printed book, Days of Disquiet, Nights of Rage (Anvil Publishing), is about the events during the Martial Law. And (one might gather from the title), about the rising revolt against the Marcos regime. Although an old book - and reprinted because of requests from teachers, not to mention - Pete added pictures, tanslations and essays that even those who have already read the original might look forward to.

~We now know that Pete is a poet, a screenwriter, a journalist, a teacher. What we don't know is that he originally wanted to write and draw his own comic book series. In high school he used to sketch comic books, and he was pretty good at it. But as time passed and he started concentrating on writing, he didn't pursue his dreams of making his own comic book. And as much as he finds writing tedious and hard, it's practically impossible to fight the forces of nature.

freddy mercury

09-28-2003, 01:19 AM
Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara on Thursday September 5th 1946 on the small spice island of Zanzibar. His parents, Bomi and Jer Bulsara, were both Persian.

After Jimi Hendrix exploded onto the scene in 1967, and Freddie became an ardent fan, he spent time sketching and drawing his hero; drawings he would frame and use to decorate the walls of his flat in Kensington, rented by his friend Chris Smith, where Freddie had moved from the family home in Feltham. At that time Kensington was an important place to be for the art crowd - it was the base of the famous Biba boutique and the home of Kensington Market, frequented by the then 'in' crowd.

In the summer of 1969 Freddie was introduced to a Liverpool band called Ibex, who had come to London to try to make a name for themselves. Ibex were a three-piece, with guitarist Mike Bersin, John 'Tupp' Taylor on bass and Mick 'Miffer' Smith on drums. They also brought with them their apprentice manager, roadie and general dogsbody Ken Testi; part-time bass player Geoff Higgins used to travel down for occasional gigs. Geoff would play bass when Tupp, a great Jethro Tull fan, wanted to play flute.

Freddie first met Ibex on 13th August 1969. Such was his enthusiasm, that just ten days later, he'd learned the band's set, brought in a few new songs, and had traveled to Bolton, Lancashire, for a gig with them - his debut public performance. The first date was 23rd August, and the occasion was one of Bolton's regular afternoon 'Bluesology' sessions, held at the town's Octagon Theatre. On the 25th August, Ibex appeared in the first 'Bluesology pop-in', an open-air event on the bandstand in Bolton's Queen Park, and the proceedings were covered in Bolton's 'Evening News'. This even featured an uncredited photograph of Freddie.

While Freddie's trip to Bolton with Ibex was photographed, Ibex's appearance at the Sink was recorded. This recording was made by Geoff Higgins; as he says, tape is chronic quality, but it demonstrates Ibex's love of Cream, Jimi Hendrix, as well as Freddie's favourite of the day, Led Zeppelin.

Somewhere between 9th September and the end of October 1969 Ibex underwent a mini upheaval - at Freddie's instigation. "I recall him canvassing the idea of calling the band Wreckage, but nobody was very enthusiastic," reveals Mike Bersin. "Then he phoned me one night and said, 'The others don't mind. How do you feel?' I said, 'If they agree, then fine'. When I spoke to the others about it, Freddie had phoned them all up and had the same conversation."

The name-change went hand-in-hand with the departure of drummer Mike 'Miffer' Smith. He was replaced by Richard Thompson, the former drummer in Brian May's 1984. Despite flashes of true potential, the end of the 1960s also marked the end of Wreckage. Gigs were few and far between, and while John Taylor, Richard Thompson and Freddie remained in London, Mike Bersin was committed to his college course in Liverpool, as he promised to his parents. Inevitably, the band petered out.

In late 1969 Freddie became the lead singer with Sour Milk Sea. The other members of the band were Chris Chesney on vocals and guitar, bass player Paul Milan, Jeremy 'Rubber' Gallop on rhythm guitar and Rob Tyrell on drums. They did a few rehearsals, and then a few gigs in Oxford (Chris's home town).

Freddie and Chris, who was about seventeen at the time, became close friends and Chris moved into the house that Freddie shared with Smile in Ferry Road, Barnes. The other members of Sour Milk Sea were more than a little peeved Chris and Freddie spent so much time together, and felt rather insecure about the future of the band. After just two months Jeremy, who owned nearly all the equipment, derided to take it back and break up the band.

In April 1970 Tim Staffell decided to leave Smile, and Freddie join them as lead singer. Freddie decided to change the name of the band to Queen, he also changed his last name to Mercury.

The further biography of Freddie Mercury is to considerable degree a story of Queen.

In 1970 Freddie met Mary Austin. They lived together for seven years and remained good friends until his death.

In 1971 John Deacon joined the band and Queen were complete. Freddie designed the band's logo using their birth signs: two fairies for him (Virgin), two lions for Roger and John (Leo) and a crab for Brian (Cancer). Freddie was the author of the first Queen song that entered the British charts (Seven Seas Of Rhye), the first big hit (Killer Queen) and the most famous Queen song that was on the top of charts for 9 weeks (Bohemian Rhapsody). Freddie has always been considered the front-man of the band.

In 1975 Queen toured Japan. A crowd of screaming fans followed them everywhere. They were taken by surprise at the strength of their reception. Freddie fell in love with Japan and soon became a fanatical collector of Japanese art and antiquities.

On October 7th, 1979 Freddie performed with the Royal Ballet. He had never done any ballet before, but it was something he had always wanted to try. The songs he had chosen to perform to were Bohemian Rhapsody and Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Songs were played by the orchestra with Freddie doing live vocals. Freddie's first dance was Bohemian Rhapsody, and he performed with skill in front of a packed house of enthusiastic balletomanes, who loved him, and he received a standing ovation for both his cameo performances.

In 1980 Freddie changed his image. He cut his hair and grew a moustache. His fans began to send him gifts of nail polish and razor blades.

At the end of 1982 Queen all agreed they wanted to take break from each other. They announced they wouldn't be touring throughout 1983. Freddie had been thinking of making a solo album for some time, and at last he had time to do something about it. He booked studio time at Musicland in Munich and began work in early 1983. During that time he was introduced to Georgio Moroder, who was working on a re-release of the 1926 Fritz Lang silent science fiction film Metropolis. He wanted to put a contemporary musical score to the film. He asked Freddie to consider collaborating on a track for the film to which Freddie agreed. He had never before co-written with anyone outside Queen, and had not recorded anyone else's compositions, apart from Larry Lurex. The result of this co-operation was the song Love Kills.

In 1983 Freddie attended a performance of Verdi's Un Ballo In Maschera at the Royal Opera House sometime in May. It was the first time when he saw Spanish opera diva Montserrat Caballé, and the sheer power and beauty of her voice mesmerized him.

On September 10, 1984 Freddie's first solo single was released. It was the track he had co-written with Georgio Moroder for Metropolis, Love Kills.

The first single from his forthcoming solo album was I Was Born To Love You. It was released on April 9, 1985. Three weeks later Freddie's first solo album Mr. Bad Guy was released on CBS Records.

July 13, 1985 was a special day for Queen and Freddie. It was the day of their memorable performance at Live Aid, a tremendous show at Wembley Stadium in front of 72,000 people. Live Aid was also broadcast to over one billion people worldwide. Queen secured their place in history, as every media person, journalist, fan and critic unanimously agreed: Queen stole the show.

The early part of 1987 was very quiet for Queen, so Freddie took the opportunity to go into Townhouse Studios to do some solo work. It resulted in a remake of the classic Platters' song The Great Pretender. The single was released on February 23rd.

In March 1987 Freddie flew to Barcelona to meet Montserrat Caballé. He gave her a cassette with two or four songs. The Spanish opera diva liked these songs and even performed one of them at London's Covent Garden. Freddie was delighted. In early April, Freddie began work on the album he agreed to record with Montserrat Caballé.

At the end of May the island of Ibiza staged a huge festival at the outrageous Ku Club. Freddie agreed to be a guest of honour and closed the event with Montserrat Caballé singing the song he had written for her and her home city, Barcelona.

On October 8th, 1988 Freddie and Montserrat appeared at the huge open air La Nit festival in Barcelona. They performed three tracks from their forthcoming album - How Can I Go On, The Golden Boy and Barcelona, accompanied by Mike Moran on piano. The long-awaited album, Barcelona, finally come out on October 10th.

October 8th was the last time Freddie Mercury performed on stage. At the time, he was terribly ill with AIDS, although he didn't want people to know about it. He announced that fact the day before he died. Being ill he continued to compose and record songs and even took part in making videos. In my opinion, I'm Going Slightly Mad video is his masterpiece.

On November 24th, 1991 Freddie died peacefully at his home in London of AIDS-related bronchial pneumonia.

On April 20th, 1992 a tribute concert in Freddie's memory was held at Wembley Stadium, and many famous rock stars took part in it. But the best tribute to Freddie was the album Made In Heaven, released on November 6th, 1995 by the three remaining members of Queen. We can hear the last songs that Freddie composed and recorded.

The Temple of Artemis in Ephesus

Location:
The ancient city of Ephesus near the modern town of Selcuk, about 50 km south of Izmir (Smyrna) in Turkey.

History:
Although the foundation of the temple dates back to the seventh century BC, the structure that earned a spot in the list of Wonders was built around 550 BC. Referred to as the great marble temple, or temple D, it was sponsored by the Lydian king Croesus and was designed by the Greek architect Chersiphron. It was decorated with bronze statues sculpted by the most skilled artists of their time: Pheidias, Polycleitus, Kresilas, and Phradmon.

The temple served as both a marketplace and a religious institution. For years, the sanctuary was visited by merchants, tourists, artisans, and kings who paid homage to the goddess by sharing their profits with her. Recent archeological excavations at the site revealed gifts from pilgrims including statuettes of Artemis made of gold and ivory... earrings, bracelets, and necklaces... artifacts from as far as Persia and India.

On the night of 21 July 356 BC, a man named Herostratus burned the temple to ground in an attempt to immortalize his name. He did indeed. Strangely enough, Alexander the Great was born the same night. The historian Plutarch later wrote that the goddess was "too busy taking care of the birth of Alexander to send help to her threatened temple". Over the next two decades, the temple was restored and is labeled "temple E" by archeologists. And when Alexander the Great conquered Asia Minor, he helped rebuild the destroyed temple.

When St Paul visited Ephesus to preach Christianity in the first century AD, he was confronted by the Artemis' cult who had no plans to abandon their goddess. And when the temple was again destroyed by the Goths in AD 262, the Ephesians vowed to rebuild. By the fourth century AD, most Ephesians had converted to Christianity and the temple lost its religious glamor. The final chapter came when in AD 401 the Temple of Artemis was torn down by St John Chrysostom. Ephesus was later deserted, and only in the late nineteenth century has the site been excavated. The digging revealed the temple's foundation and the road to the now swampy site. Attempts were recently made to rebuilt the temple, but only a few columns have been re-erected.

Description:
The foundation of the temple was rectangular in form, similar to most temples at the time. Unlike other sanctuaries, however, the building was made of marble, with a decorated facade overlooking a spacious courtyard. Marble steps surrounding the building platform led to the high terrace which was approximately 80 m (260 ft) by 130 m (430 ft) in plan. The columns were 20 m (60 ft) high with Ionic capitals and carved circular sides. There were 127 columns in total, aligned orthogonally over the whole platform area, except for the central cella or house of the goddess.

The temple housed many works of art, including four ancient bronze statues of Amazons sculpted by the finest artists at the time. When St Paul visited the city, the temple was adorned with golden pillars and silver statuettes, and was decorated with paintings. There is no evidence that a statue of the goddess herself was placed at the center of the sanctuary, but there is no reason not to believe so.

The early detailed descriptions of the temple helped archeologists reconstruct the building. Many reconstructions such as that by H.F. von Erlach depicted the facade with a four-column porch which never existed. More accurate reconstructions may give us an idea about the general layout of the temple. However, its true beauty lies in the architectural and artistic details which will forever remain unknown.

Alisha's Attic

- The pair are sisters, born fourteen months apart in the early seventies. Karen was born in Chadwell Heath, Essex on the 8th of January 1971 and Shelly the following year in Barking, Essex on the 20th of March. Both sisters have long had an ambition to be a part of the music scene and they began by sending off various demo tapes to record companies.

- Alisha's Attic were discovered by Dave Stewart (of Eurythmics fame) after they sent him a demo tape recorded at home. Impressed, Mercury Records immediately signed the band and their debut album Alisha Rules The World soon followed. It was released in November 1996 to hugely positive reviews, going platinum in the following year.

- The girls were highly successful with their promotional tours in 1996 and 1997, touring with Australian group INXS and with the Lilith Fair in the United States. They also gave stunning headlining performances in various venues around the UK. Their popularity grew as their frequency of live appearances increased.

- The time soon come in 1998 to begin recording a follow up to their excellent debut album. The band made the decision to start recording with a new producer, Mark Plati, in New York. Illumina was born and released in the UK in October 1998—almost two years after the debut—to mixed reviews. The band's image and sound had changed since the first album and it began to seem like people had forgotten about Alisha's Attic. The first single from the new album, The Incidentals, did well, reaching number thirteen in its first week of release and staying in the charts for seven weeks. However, the charts, populated by rehashes of old songs and manufactured groups, soon became an inhospitable place.

- Moving on to a new location and a new producer, Alisha's Attic wrote and recorded an album in Mendocino, California, completely different from their previous work. Time had passed since the first album and maturity in the music and lyrics clearly shone through. Working with Bill Bottrell, one of Sheryl Crowe's producers, The House We Built was released as Alisha's Attic's third studio album.

- In 2001, Mercury records chose to purge their inventory of artists and they parted company with Alisha's Attic. The sisters decided to pursue solo careers—Shelly as a solo singer-songwriter and Karen as a lyricist for high-profile pop artists such as the Minogue sisters. However, one of the gems to come after the parting of Alisha's Attic from their record company was The Vaults I, a collection of previously unreleased and untouched, but magically beautiful songs.

[medyo nahirapan ako dito ah *kamots ulo*]

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

- the book is a journey into a supernatural world that only our minds can understand and hence relate with the small voice inside our hearts. It tells us about a boy named Santiago who, even though educated and widely read, follows his heart and becomes a shepherd (?) just for the sake of traveling. A recurring dream in the course of events which lead him from Spain to the pyramids in Egypt in search of a treasure, mysterious mediators and messengers, rich lessons make the journey full of enlightening obstacles in the path of the boy and full of goose bumps for the readers. It tells you about following your intuitions, which nature herself strengthens and makes dominant in you. Its language is extremely simple as if reading Dr. Seuss books (but the content is nothing like it!) and the book gives us surprising yet extremely viable advices on relationships, PRs without being preachy. An excellent book for people in the management turf and for those who are trying to rediscover their spirituality or just for bookworms.

Sergio Mendes

Born: 02/11/1941 in Niteroi, Brazil
Nationality: Brazil

For most of the second half of the '60s, Sergio Mendes was the top-selling Brazilian artist in the United States, charting huge hit singles and LPs that regularly made the Top Five. His records with his group Brasil '66 regularly straddled the domestic pop and international markets in America, getting played heavily on AM radio stations, both rock and easy listening, and he gave his label, AM, something to offer light jazz listeners beyond the work of the company's co-founder, Herb Alpert. During this period, he also became an international music star and one of the most popular musicians in South America.

Born the son of a physician in Niteroi, Brazil, Sergio Mendes began studying music at the local conservatory while still a boy, with the intention of becoming a classical pianist. Mendes was living in Rio de Janeiro as the bossa nova craze hit in the mid- to late '50s, and at age 15, he abandoned classical music in favor of bossa nova. Mendes began spending time with other young Brazilian musicians in Rio de Janeiro, absorbing the musical ferment around him in the company of such figures as Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto. Their company was augmented by the periodic visits of American jazz giants such as Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Byrd, Paul Winter, Roy Eldridge, and Herbie Mann. Mendes became the leader of his own group, the Sexteto Bossa Rio, and was heard with them by many visiting musicians. He made his first recording, Dance Moderno, in 1961 on the Philips Records label. By 1962, Mendes and his band were playing at Birdland in New York in an impromptu performance with Cannonball Adderley (who was officially on the bill). Mendes and Adderley cut an album together for Capitol Records that was released later that year.

His early music, represented on albums like Bossa Nova York and Girl From Ipanema, was heavily influenced by Antonio Carlos Jobim, on whose recording Mendes worked. Mendes liked what he had found on his visit to New York and in 1964, he moved to the United States, initially to play on albums with Jobim and Art Farmer, and formed Brasil '65 the following year. The group recorded for Capitol without attracting too much notice at first. In 1966, however, Mendes and his band -- renamed Brasil '66 -- were signed to AM Records and something seemed to click between the group and its audience.

The group, consisting in its first AM incarnation of Mendes on keyboards, Bob Matthews on bass, Jao Palma on the drums, Jose Soares as percussionist, Lani Hall (aka Mrs. Herb Alpert and AM's co-founder) on vocals, and Janis Hansen on vocals, was successful upon the release of its first album for the label, with its mix of light jazz, a bossa nova beat, and contemporary soft pop melodies. Their self-titled debut LP rose to number six nationally, propelled by the presence of the single "Mas Que Nada." Their second album, Equinox, yielded a trio of minor hits, "Night and Day," "Constant Rain (Chove Chuva)," and "For Me," but their third, Look Around, rose to number five behind a number three single of the group's cover of the Beatles' "Fool on the Hill," and an accompanying hit with "Scarborough Fair," based on the Simon Garfunkel version of the folk song. Crystal Illusions, from 1969, featured a version of Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" and the hit single "Pretty World." Depending upon one's sensibilities, these covers -- especially "Fool on the Hill" and "Scarborough Fair" -- were either legitimate internationalized pop versions of the originals, or they were "elevator music."

yep!! :D

Trojan War

The Trojan War has its roots in the marriage between Peleus and Thetis, a sea-goddess. Peleus and Thetis had not invited Eris, the goddess of discord, to their marriage and the outraged goddess stormed into the wedding banquet and threw a golden apple onto the table. The apple belonged to, Eris said, whomever was the fairest.

Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite each reached for the apple. Zeus proclaimed that Paris, prince of Troy and thought to be the most beautiful man alive, would act as the judge.

Hermes went to Paris, and Paris agreed to act as the judge. Hera promised him power, Athena promised him wealth, and Aphrodite promised the most beautiful woman in the world.

Paris chose Aphrodite, and she promised him that Helen, wife of Menelaus, would be his wife. Paris then prepared to set off for Sparta to capture Helen. Twin prophets Cassandra and Helenus tried to persuade him against such action, as did his mother, Hecuba. But Paris would not listen and he set off for Sparta.

In Sparta, Menelaus, husband of Helen, treated Paris as a royal guest. However, when Menelaus left Sparta to go to a funeral, Paris abducted Helen (who perhaps went willingly) and also carried off much of Menelaus' wealth.

In Troy, Helen and Paris were married. This occured around 1200 B.C. (Wood, 16).

- it is the story of four people—Bishop Myriel, Valjean, Fantine, and Marius—who meet, part, then meet again during the most agitated decades of 19th-century France. It also tells the story of the 1832 revolution and describes the unpleasant side of Paris. The novel is in essence a plea for humane treatment of the poor and for equality among all citizens.

- In 1987 the musical adaptation opened on Broadway to popular acclaim.

PARTHENON (http://old.jccc.net/~jjackson/part.html)

- The Parthenon was built to house a huge gold and ivory (chryselephantine) statue of the goddess Athena, patron of the polis of Athens. The polis--or city-state--was the Greeks' distinctive political formation--a walled town with surrounding villages and countryside, and ideally politically independent of its neighbors. The high place of a polis-- the acropolis- -was the site of shrines to locally important deities.

- created between 449 and 432 B.C.

- means apartment of the virgin.

THE AWAKENING by Kate Chopin

The Awakening by Kate Chopin (Kulang 'to ah! ^^;;; ang haba kasi nung naresearch ko eh!)

The theme of Awakening is conformity versus expressing the self, that the interest of the self conflict with social norms and behavior. Another idea which also seem to emerge is that Chopin notes the limits society of that time placed on women which allowed them three options to conform, die or be shunned from that society. The romantic love which allows the woman to endure dependence on her husband is the promise of fulfillment and that it denies that there is a conflict of power and equality in marriage (Poovey). ELIZABETH I (http://www.luminarium.org/renlit/eliza.htm)

- 1533-1603 AD

- was born in 1533 to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.

- Elizabeth inherited a tattered realm: dissension between Catholics and Protestants tore at the very foundation of society; the royal treasury had been bled dry by Mary and her advisors, Mary's loss of Calais left England with no continental possessions for the first time since the arrival of the Normans in 1066 and many (mainly Catholics) doubted Elizabeth's claim to the throne.

- she proved most calm and calculating (even though she had a horrendous temper) in her political acumen, employing capable and distinguished men to carrying out royal prerogative.

- she was also a master of political science

- Elizabeth's reign was during one of the more constructive periods in English history. Literature bloomed through the works of Spenser, Marlowe and Shakespeare.

THE WORST WITCH

- a children's book series by Jill Murphy

-"The Worst Witch" books are about a witch named Mildred Hubble. To put it in a nutshell, Mildred wasn't much of a witch - well, she could cast a spell, but never the right one. In the first book, "The Worst Witch", Mildred messes up the broom display. It isn't really her fault but nobody believes her. In the second book, "The Worst Witch strikes again", a new girl comes into the story and she is the real troublemaker, but everybody still thinks it's Mildred. Last but not least, the third book, "A Bad Spell for the Worst Witch". In that, Mildred gets turned into a frog and gets into all sorts of trouble.

- it has been also made as a tv series with the same title.

THE SALEM WITCH TRIALS (http://www.salemweb.com/guide/witches.shtml)

- The events which led to the Witch Trials actually occurred in what is now the town of Danvers, then a parish of Salem Town, known as Salem Village. Launching the hysteria was the bizarre, seemingly inexplicable behavior of two young girls; the daughter, Betty, and the niece, Abigail Williams, of the Salem Village minister, Reverend Samuel Parris.

- three accused women were examined by Magistrates Jonathan Corwin and John Hathorne in February, 1692.

- by the time the hysteria had spent itself, 24 people had died. Nineteen were hanged on Gallows Hill in Salem Town, but some died in prison. Giles Corey at first pleaded not guilty to charges of witchcraft, but subsequently refused to stand trial. This refusal meant he could not be convicted legally. However, his examiners chose to subject him to interrogation by the placing of stone weights on his body. He survived this brutal torture for two days before dying.

THE DREAMLAND CHRONICLES

- a book by DAVID DARLINGTON

-David Darlington, knowing that he was entering a morass of factual and social weirdness, went to Nevada in 1993 to scout the region, talk to its fringe inhabitants, and try to get the story straightened out on paper. What he got is fascinating, disturbing, and not easily defined.

- The Dreamland Chronicles, Darlington painstakingly details the official documented history of the Groom Lake test base, which is where the American military conglomerate built the U2, developed spy planes that went several times the speed of sound, experimented on captured Russian airplanes, and perfected Stealth technology. It also officially does not exist; this fact, and other strange-but-true stories of the paranoid and counterproductive security at the base, have only added to its legend.

- Area 51: The Dreamland Chronicles is still absurdly funny in parts, but the author maintains an admiration for individuals whose basic belief is that government should not hide its activities from its citizens.

Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc

- Jehanne d'Arc or Darc in medieval French

- She was born on January 6th around the year 1412, to Jacques and Isabelle d'Arc in the little village of Domremy, in the Barrois region (now part of "Lorraine") on the border of eastern France.
The events in France during these years would set the stage for Joan's later life and the circumstances surrounding her death.
Although at the time she was born a shaky truce was still in effect between France and England, a civil war had erupted between two factions of the French Royal family which would allow the English to re-invade. One faction, called the "Orleanists" or "Armagnacs", was led by Count Bernard VII of Armagnac and Duke Charles of Orleans (whom Joan would later regard with special warmth); their rivals, known as the "Burgundians", were led by Duke John-the-Fearless of Burgundy. The forces of his pro-English son, somewhat ironically named Philip "the Good", would later capture Joan and hand her over to the English; one of his loyal supporters, an unscrupulous pro-Burgundian clergyman and English advisor named Pierre Cauchon, would later arrange her conviction on their behalf.
With the French divided into warring parties and negotiations to renew the truce with England a failure, King Henry V invaded France in August of 1415 after reviving his family's faded claim to the French throne. On October 25th an Armagnac-dominated French army was cut to pieces by Henry's forces at the battle of Agincourt. The English returned in 1417, conquering much of northern France and gaining the support (in 1419) of the new Burgundian Duke, Philip-the-Good, who agreed to recognize Henry V as the legal heir to the French throne while rejecting the rival claim of the man whom Joan would consider the rightful successor, Charles of Ponthieu (later known as Charles VII), the last heir of the Valois dynasty which had ruled France since 1328. read more (http://joan-of-arc.org/joanofarc_short_biography.html)
